In May, the number of tourists in Latvian hotels fell by 88.5%

Accordingly data of the Central Statistical Bureau, in May 2020 the number of foreign and resident visitors comprised 30 thousand, which is 88.5 % less than in May 2019, but, compared to April of this year, it has increased more than 2 times. As compared to May of the previous year, the number of nights spent by visitors has reduced by 84.2 % and comprised 77.5 thousand nights.

In May this year the number of foreign visitors comprised 6.3 thousand, which is 96.5 % less than in May last year, when the number of nights spent comprised 28.6 thousand, and that is a drop of 91.9 %.


In May 2020, 23.7 thousand Latvian visitors were hosted at tourist accommodation establishments, which is 69.2 % less than in the respective year of the last year. The number of nights spent by residents comprised 48.9 thousand – that is a drop of 64.3 %.




In May 97.7 % of respondents submitted report on the activity of accommodation establishments, of which 45 % of respondents (in 2019 – 17 %) answered that they did not carry out activity mentioning as a reason that tourism season has not started yet, improvements or repair of accommodation were carried out, or they were on downtime after emergency situation was declared in the country on 12 March 2020.
