One-third of Latvia's population resides in Riga

At the beginning of this year, according to the data of the Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs, the city of Riga had a population of 693,000, which means that the share of the population of Riga when looking at the total population country has increased to 33.3 percent, according to the Riga City Council's report for 2019, reported LETA/BNS.

The report indicates that in the period until 2013, the city of Riga experienced a constant decrease in its population, which was followed by an increase until 2017, but since then, for the past three years, the city's population has been declining once again.


At the beginning of 2019, there were 388,700 people of working age in the city of Riga, which is 6,200 less than at the beginning of 2018. On the other hand, the ethnic composition in Riga did not change significantly last year, namely, Latvians made up 47.1%, but Russians - 36.4% of the population of Riga.


According to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau, the average gross salary in Riga last year reached 1,206 euros, which is 6.8% more than in 2018. The salary level in Riga last year was 12.1% higher than in the rest of the country, according to the Riga City Council's 2019 report.
