Latvia: Smaller gender pay gap recorded

Provisional data of 2018 show that average gross earnings of females were 14.1% smaller than those of males, which is the lowest indicator registered since 2012. In 2017, females per hour earned on average 15.7% less than males. Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) estimate shows that the greatest gender pay gap (17.3%) was recorded in 2014.

In 2018, the largest unadjusted gender pay gap was observed in financial and insurance activities where males per hour earned 27.6% more than females.

Decline in full-time gender pay gap and rise in part-time gender pay gap

In 2018, earnings of females working full-time were 17.1% lower than those of males, while gender pay gap between employees working part-time was smaller – 12.7%.

In 2018, the lowest gender pay gap level in private sector was recorded – 10.7%. In public sector gender pay gap is smaller than a decade ago as well – 13.4% in 2018 and 13.7 % in 2009. The greatest gender gap between private and public sector was registered in 2013 – 20.5 %, however it has become smaller over the years. Compared to 2017, in 2018 gender pay gap in public sector reduced by 0.2 percentage points, while in private sector by 2.7 percentage points.


In 2018, compared to 2017, gender pay gap decline was registered in all age groups. The smallest unadjusted gender pay gap was recorded in the age group 55–64 (9.9%), while the largest in age group 35–44 (16.9%) and age group 25–34 (16.5%).
