Latvians still regard real estate as best investment

BC, Riga, 28.06.2018.Print version
Latvians still regard real estate as the best investment option, Swedbank Latvia spokeswoman Kristine Jakubovska told LETA, citing the bank’s latest survey.

She said that 46% of respondents in the latest survey said they would prefer to invest their money in real estate (49% in 2015), 26% would prefer to invest in gold and 18% in life insurance with the saving option.

The Swedbank representative noted, however, that in reality people most often choose to deposit their savings in bank (31%), private pension funds (28%) and insurance products with the saving option (15%). Only 9% of the surveyed people had invested in real estate in the past year. Investing in securities proved less popular as 8% of respondents had invested in stocks, 8% in investment funds and 4% in bonds.

The Swedbank survey reveals that 49% of people in Latvia believe that this is a good time for saving up money and making investments. The most positive attitude to saving and investing was voiced by respondents in the age group of up to 30 years (the so-called Millennials). However, while 74% of respondents in this age group were positive about saving and investing, only 22% of them were actually saving money. The most active savers were in the age group of 40 to 50-year-old people (47%), according to the Swedbank survey.
