Relocation of 70-80 jobs to NE Estonia now certain

BC, Tallinn, 18.07.2017.Print version
As part of the plan to relocate a number of state jobs out of Tallinn, decisions have been made regarding 70-80 jobs to move them to East-Viru county, Minister of Regional Affairs Jaak Aab told regional newspaper Pohjarannik, cites LETA/BNS.

"By the end of May all state agencies and institutions presented their vision of how jobs could be relocated out of Tallinn. Just recently I asked things over -- when it comes to 70-80 jobs it is known quite precisely that they will be moving. The broader goal is 150 jobs, and already during the next year," Aab told the newspaper.

The minister said that he cannot go into details at this point because the matter is still being decided within ministries.

"I do not want to spread information until there is no concrete information as to what institution or post will be moving. About half of it we know already," Aab said.

The minister said that to avoid peripherization, the government has to start spending more money.

"The only thing the state can do is spend money to put the brakes on this process. The example I've always liked to cite is that in Finland a doctor in Lappland gets 150% of the pay of a doctor in Helsinki. It's as simple as this," Aab said.

"People's life away from major centers has to be paid for because life there is more expensive. Transport is more expensive for them, they must incur additional costs to attend cultural events, for instance. The poor state that our public transport is in means that you cannot cope without a car living in a rural area," he added.
