Latvia’s situation is more peaceful than that of the two other Baltic States

Latvia is currently the world's 32nd most peaceful country and its situation is more peaceful than that of the two other Baltic States, according to the Global Peace Index 2016, drawn up by the Institute for Economics & Peace, reports LETA.

Among the 163 countries included in the study, Estonia has taken 36th and Lithuania 37th position. Last year, Latvia was in 33rd place, Estonia in 39th and Lithuania in 35th place.

Latvia, like the other two Baltic States, is among countries scoring high on the Global Peace Index.



 

Iceland has been named as the world's most peaceful country, followed by Denmark, Austria, New Zealand, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Canada, Japan, Slovenia and Finland.

 

The United States has been ranked 103rd most peaceful country in the world. China has taken 120th position and Turkey 145th place. Palestine, which has been included in the index for the first time, in is 146th position.

 

Russia, which has been ranked 151st in the Global Peace Index, is in the group of highly restive and unstable countries like Nigeria (149), North Korea (150), the Democratic Republic of Congo (152), Pakistan (153), Libya (154), Sudan (155) and Ukraine (156).

 

The authors of the study conclude that the world is becoming a more dangerous place and there are now just 10 countries, which can be considered completely free from conflict. The index shows that 81 countries became more peaceful in the past year, while the situation deteriorated in 79.

 

Estimates show that violence cost 13.3% of the world's GDP last year, or USD 1,876 per inhabitant of each country.
