Around 3,000 gathered for trade union rally in Riga Old Town
The rally participants are holding various posters and yelling various slogans calling for better pay for teachers and medics.
It seems that the rally is also being used by others to voice their opinions on other issues as well.
A trade union close to Harmony is also participating in the rally, as well as Harmony MPs Sergejs Potapkins and Igors Pimenovs.
The Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia will await the reaction from the government and Saeima of today's rally regarding the problem matters within the Latvian healthcare and education systems.
The head of the trade union Peteris Krigers told LETA that today's rally went by as planned, but that the number of rally participants was considerably larger than originally planned. ''This likely means that those who attended were confident why they came out,'' he said.
Krigers said that the trade union will await the reaction from the government and Saeima on what was expressed during today's rally.
''This situation has not changed – financing has not been increase for strategic sectors. Thus, there are concerns that these sectors are being destroyed,'' he added.
As reported, the rally is aimed at highlighting what is happening in various national sectors at the moment – healthcare, education, culture, internal and external security.
The organizers of the rally hope to gather at least 1,000 persons, and say that smaller rallies could also take place in other Latvian towns and cities.
