Lithuanians increasingly alarmed over illegal migration

BC, Vilnius, 12.02.2016.Print version
Residents of Lithuania are becoming increasingly alarmed over the security threats of illegal migration, shows a poll published on Friday, informs LETA/BNS.

Asked to specify three key problems to public security, 19% of respondents pointed to illegal migration, indicating an increase by a factor of five year-on-year.

"We have a problem we all see clearly, it is somewhere far away but is covered rather actively," Interior Minister Saulius Skvernelis told journalists in his presentation of the results of the large-scale survey conducted last fall.

In the minister's opinion, politicians are raising the migration issue in the run-up to parliamentary elections.

According to the survey, the biggest threats to public security are violent crimes (39%) and corruption (37%), traffic safety (34%) and drug-related crimes (28%).

Commissioned by the ministry and the police, the poll of 3,011 residents aged between 15 and 75 was conducted by Spinter Tyrimai (Spinter Surveys) company on Aug. 20 through Oct. 28 last year. The margin of error is under 1.8%.
