Number of inmates drops below 2,700 for 1st time in Estonia

Altogether 2,694 people, including 2,100 convicted criminals and 594 people in pretrial detention, were held in Estonian prisons as on November 16th, marking the first time that the number of incarcerated population is smaller than 2,700, informs LETA.

The number dropped below 2,900 for the first time ever in February and below 2,800 in early summer.

 

The prison holding the largest number of inmates in Estonia is Tallinn Prison, which had a population of 886 on Monday. Next comes Tartu Prison with a population of 827, Viru Prison in northeastern Estonia with 813, and the prisons of Harku and Murru near Tallinn with a population of 168 combined.

 

The number of minors held behind bars was 20, of women 138, of persons serving a life sentence 41 and of people held in open prison 218.

 

Convicts on parole numbered 4,781, including 603 people released from jail before serving their full term. Convicted offenders under electronic surveillance numbered 118.

 

In March 2014, the number of people held in Estonian prisons for the first time fell below 3,000 since the country regained its independence. Ten years ago Estonia's prison population numbered 4,576.
