Latvian residents in favor of president elected in open vote
When asked whether the president should be elected in an open vote, 59% of respondents said "definitely", while 27% said "rather yes".
Only 9% of respondents said that the president of Latvia should not be elected in an open vote, including 6% who said "rather not", 3% – "definitely not".
5% of respondents had no opinion.
The survey was conducted from February 17 to 19. A total of 950 economically-active Latvian residents, aged between 18 and 55, were interviewed.
As reported, the Constitution stipulates that the president of Latvia is elected by MPs in secret ballot, following a majority of 51 votes. All For Latvia-For Fatherland And Freedom/LNNK filed the motion suggesting that the president should be elected in an open vote.
Altering the Constitution requires at least two-thirds or 67 MPs present at the Saeima meeting.
