Prosecutor's office in Latvia claims that digital television transmitters be seized

Nina Kolyako, BC, Riga, 03.08.2010.Print version
The prosecutor's office today asked Riga Regional Court to order the seizure of six digital television transmitters and a digital TV head station. The said equipment is worth several million lats altogether.

Attorney Janis Rozenbergs informed LETA that the transmitters belong to the company Hannu Digital, they have been installed at the Zakusala TV tower and ensure digital television broadcasts in Riga Region. The prosecutor's office does not deny this.

The prosecutor's office believes that this equipment must be seized as the money that was used to purchase the equipment was defrauded from Digitalais Latvijas radio un televizijas centrs (DLRTC) via a money laundering scheme.

The Riga Regional Court will probably consider the prosecutor office's request at its next meeting, due August 4.

Today, the Riga Regional Court resumed review of the so-called digital television affair after a one-and-a-half-month break.

All 20 defendants in the case have pleaded not guilty.

As reported, the case is concerned with an agreement between the now-defunct Digital Latvian Radio and Television Center and Kempmeyer subsidiary Kempmeyer Media Latvia, which foresaw the gradual introduction of digital television in Latvia and the installation of special equipment for digital broadcasting. Total spending on the project has been estimated at many tens of millions of lats.
