At its session on Thursday, the Government of Estonia approved definitively of the plan to establish a pan-Estonian broadband network, writes Postimees Online/LETA.

According to the plan, by the year 2013 the network should bring ultra-fast internet access to even the most distant rural areas.

The minister of economic affairs and communications Juhan Parts noted that the Government worded the objectives rather clearly – by the year 2012, the ultra-fast broadband connection ought to be accessible on 90% of Estonia’s territory and by the year 2015 everywhere.

Parts noted that in order to build the broadband network, a foundation will be created where the State will not be a party, but all major telecommunications enterprises will be.

“The State plans to provide significant support for developing the infrastructure; as of now, the State’s contribution that is required is approximately one billion kroons,” explained the minister. He added that the State will support in areas where developing infrastructure would not be possible in terms of financial feasibility – in villages and in areas of sparse population.

The new fibre-optic network will make it possible for each household user to exploit the real data exchange speed of 100 MB per second.
