Baltic and Nordic regulators sign memorandum on cooperation in electronic communications

The regulators of the Baltic and Nordic countries signed a memorandum in Riga today on cooperation in the sphere of electronic communications, LETA was told at the Latvian Public Utilities Commission.

The cooperation memorandum is a joint document of eight countries’ regulators, which will be used as a basis for strengthening further cooperation.


The cooperation agreement provides for joint efforts to promote an effective development of the electronic communications market in the Baltic and Nordic countries in accordance with market trends on the European Economic Area. The regulators commit to cooperation in order to promote competition on the electronic communications market, ensuring transparency and non-discriminatory conditions on the market.


Under the agreement, the regulators also commit to sharing experience and working out a joint position on regulatory issues in the electronic communications industry and boost the region’s international representation.


During the signing event, the regulators of the eight countries informed their colleagues on their strategic plans for following years. The Latvian Public Utilities Commission presented its targets the regulator aims to meet by 2021, with the main challenges in the sphere of electronic communications including the launch of the 5G standard, development of the Internet of Things, and competition of infrastructures where several operators will be offering their services using their networks.
