Deputy speaker of the Estonian parliament discusses strengthening IT cooperation with Singaporean colleague

Deputy speaker of the Estonian parliament Taavi Roivas, who along with a business delegation is currently on a working visit to Malaysia and Singapore, at a meeting with vice speaker of the Singaporean parliament Charles Chong on September 20th discussed strengthening digital cooperation between Estonia and Singapore, informs LETA/BNS.

Roivas said that Estonia has a lot to learn from Singapore's smart city concept and its implementation, while Singapore in turn has expressed interest in Estonia's e-governance and digital identity, spokespeople for the Estonian parliament said.


"Even though Estonia and Singapore are far from each other geographically, the countries think alike in a number of things - for example, zero tolerance for corruption, supporting innovation but also putting emphasis on digital development," Roivas said in a press release.


A three-day business seminar was also held in Singapore, with participants including Estonian businesses and local entrepreneurs and investors.


Roivas on Tuesday delivered remarks at the international tech conference Slush Singapore, where the introduced Estonia's e-state story.


Roivas on Thursday is to head to the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur, where he is to also attend business seminars and business delegation meetings.


Roivas is scheduled to meet with the prime minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong, Minister of Communication and Information Janil Puthucheary, and a minister for the field of trade and industry, Sim Ann. In addition, Roivas will deliver a public lecture at a renowned Singaporean university, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, and will be one of the main speakers at the Innovation Labs World conference on e-government and digital society.


Roivas is accompanied by a 34-strong business delegation, including 25 mostly tech companies. The food and defense industries are also represented among the delegation.
