Lithuania and Oman strengthen cooperation in ICT

On May 27th, Rimantas Sinkevicius, Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania, met with the delegation from Oman led by Dr Salim Sultan Al Ruzaiqi, CEO of Information Technology Authority. During the meeting, the parts agreed to mutual cooperation in developing the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), reported BC the Ministry of Transport and Communications.

"Currently, Lithuania is investing heavily in establishing modern, comfortable and secure e-services. Today, more than a third of Lithuanian households already use high-speed 30 Mb/s or faster internet connection; moreover, 7.5% of households use faster than 100 Mb/s internet connection. This is one of the best indicators in the European Union," during the meeting said Minister Rimantas Sinkevicius.

 

In addition, Lithuania continues to be a leading country in fiber-optic network penetration. The number of country's population that uses the internet on a daily basis is constantly increasing. In 2010, the internet was used daily by 44% of Lithuanians, whereas at the end of 2014, already 57% of Lithuanians used the internet daily.

 

Furthermore, in 2013, 34% of country's population were using e-services offered by the public administration and in 2014, 41.5% of the population. E-government gateway offers 530 e-services provided by more than 200 different state and municipal institutions. Last year, 1 million 300 thousand of unique visitors (compared to 1 million in 2013) visited the public e-services portal. 82% of visitors rated the quality of information found in the public administration websites as positive.

 

The representatives of Omani delegation underlined that they highly appreciate Lithuania's achievements in the ICT sector. According to them, the meeting helped to understand better each other's interests and it will allow strengthening the bilateral cooperation.
