EUR 3.5 mln lost in skolas.lv project

BC, Riga, 23.02.2015.Print version
The Education and Science Ministry has decided to halt the maintenance of the "skolas.lv" school portal, which means that the EUR 3.5 million invested in the development and maintenance of the portal so far have been lost, furthermore, these funds will not be covered by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), according to the ministry's reply to MP Regina Locmele-Lunova (Harmony).

Harmony's press secretary Katrina Iljinska informed LETA that the letter points to a potential squandering of funds, and that official investigation is under way at the Education and Science Ministry. The results are yet to be revealed. Following an assessment of the activities of skolas.lv in January 2015, the Central Finance and Contracting Agency decided that the ERDF's funding requested for the project would not be allocated.

"The question is – who is responsible for the loss of EUR 3.5 million at a time when the state requires money for more important matters – hospitals, social guarantees, salaries for teachers and police officers?" Locmele-Lunova said.

The issue was also discussed by the government last week. Education and Science Minister Marite Seile believes that the officials' responsibility for failing to implement the skolas.lv project should be considered. The minister said at the government meeting that a probe has been launched into the case, and that the results will be presented on February 27. "The situation is critical. I am afraid that there will be a need for a serious investigation in the officials' activities," the minister said.

Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma (Unity) said that the situation must be solved, adding that officials must take responsibility for their actions.
