Oaths of office of first Latvia’s presidents being sold on E-bay for USD 30,000

BC, Riga, 21.12.2014.Print version
The book of oaths signed by the first three presidents of Latvia has been put up for bids on the online marketplace "E-bay" for USD 30,000 (EUR 24,420), reports LETA, referring to the portal lsm.lv.

The portal's experts say that if the document turns out to be authentic, its artistic value would be much higher than the historic value.

The case once again proves that Latvia lacks a proper legal framework that could be applied in such cases.

This is not the first time a document containing signatures of former Latvian presidents Janis Cakste, Gustavs Zemgals, and Alberts Kviesis appears on "E-bay". One-and-a-half years ago, the same owner tried to sell the document for EUR 100,000.

The cover of the document features the coat of arms of Latvia and contains several pages of the oath and signatures of the first presidents of Latvia inside.

The head of the State Archives of Latvia, Mara Sprudza told Latvian Radio that the archives contain no such oaths. There is also no information on whether such documents existed at the time they were supposedly signed.
