Rail freight in Latvia down 15.8% in 2019

In 2019, freight shipping by rail in Latvia declined 15.8 % from 2018 to 41.492 mln tons, the Transport Ministry's data shows.

International freight shipments by rail in 2019 fell 16.9 % on year to 39.782 mln tons, and domestic freight shipments rose 25.1% to 1.71 mln tons.


Transit freight carried by rail was down 18.6% from 2018 to 36.176 mln tons in 2019. Import freight rose 6.5% to 3.325 mln tons, and export cargo was down 11.4% to 280,800 tons in 2019.


Shipping of rail cargo via Latvia’s ports decreased 19.8% to 31.631 mln tons and deliveries of transit cargo by land declined 9.9% to 4.546 mln tons.


A total of 49,26 mln tons of freight were shipped by rail in Latvia in 2018, up 12%.
