Latvia: Economic crimes unit arrests assets worth USD 0.5 mln in so-called Magnitsky case

In February, the economic crimes unit (ENAP) of the State Police has arrested assets worth USD 0.5 million (EUR 437,067) in the so-called Magnitsky case, LETA learned from the police.
The police said that Latvian law enforcement institutions identified a number of bank accounts, properties and assets purchased in interest of Russian citizens. Accounts in Latvian banks, related with laundering USD 230 mln uncovered by Russian lawyer Sergey Magnitsky, were used to make these purchases.
Among the arrested assets, there are also two real estate properties arrested in Latvia, purchased using funds from Cypriot accounts. Also, one account was arrested that was used to sell a yacht. The account belongs to a widow of former Russian State Duma lawmaker.
Latvian law enforcement institutions are actively cooperating with foreign colleagues and other institutions, such as the Finance and Capital Market Commission.
