Ventspils Mayor Aivars Lembergs (For Latvia and Ventspils) has resigned from the board of the Freeport of Ventspils Authority, as Lembergs confirmed to LETA.

Lembergs is stepping down from the port's board in order not to interfere with work of the Ventspils Freeport Authority or impair the port's competitiveness in any way, he explained. "I have asked Ventspils City Council to appoint another board member in my place while all the circumstances are clarified," Lembergs said.

He said that an extraordinary meeting of Ventspils City Council would be convened Tuesday afternoon to appoint a new council representative on the board of Ventspils Freeport Authority.

Currently, the board of the Ventspils Freeport Authority is made up of eight members - four representatives of Ventspils City Council, who are appointed and dismissed by the municipality, and four representatives of ministries.

Three Freeport of Veentspils Authority board members who currently represent the Ventspils City Council are councilmen Janis Vitolins (For Latvia and Ventspils), Guntis Blumbergs (For Latvia and Ventspils) and Didzis Osenieks (For Latvia and Ventspils). Girts Valdis Kristovskis has been delegated to work on the port's board by the Finance Ministry, Inguna Strautmani by the Transport Ministry, Rudolfs Nerets by the Economics Ministry, and Laila Spalina by the Environmental Protection and Regional Development Ministry.
