Six Latvian architecture firms have joined the Architects Declare climate movement, representatives of Made Arhitekts company informed LETA.

Latvia is the first Baltic state to joined the movement with six architecture firms: Arche, Gaiss, Arhitekts Krauklis, Made Arhitekti, Nomad Arhitekti and Vincents.

The Architects Declare movement started in May 2019 in the UK, defining 11 principles architects have to commit to with the aim to reduce the damaging environmental impact of construction.

Representatives of the architecture firm indicated that human activity has been reducing the world's biological diversity at an increasing rate and people's living conditions are now threatened by climate change, which is becoming the most serious issue of our time.

Construction and maintenance of buildings is responsible for nearly 40% of human-generated carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and other pollution, and architects can play a major role in preventing this pollution.

By joining the climate movement, the architects commit to scaling down on the use of resources in architecture and urban planning in general and in details, to speed up the transition to low-carbon materials in construction.

At present, the Architects Declare movement unites over 3,700 architecture firms from 18 countries.
