The Administrative District Court has ruled the government's decision not to approve the reelection of Indrikis Muiznieks' as University of Latvia rector unlawful, according to the ruling obtained by LETA.

As it ruled in Muiznieks' favor, the court invalidated the government's August 29 decree under which Muiznieks was not reappointed the university's rector.

The court also gave the Cabinet of Ministers three weeks to repeatedly decide on Muiznieks' reappointment as University of Latvia rector, taking into consideration the facts and legal analysis included in the verdict.

The ruling can be appealed within a month before the Administrative Regional Court.

As reported, on August 28, 2019, Muiznieks filed a lawsuit, contesting the government's decision not to reappoint him as the university's rector following an inconclusive rectoral election and asked to impose a temporary ban on a new election.

On September 30 the Administrative District Court suspended the Cabinet of Ministers decision not to approve Muiznieks as the University of Latvia rector, which means that Muiznieks could continue as the university's acting rector.

After prolonged discussions, the government decided at the end of August against reappointing Muiznieks as rector of the University of Latvia based on the Education and Science Ministry’s claims of multiple violations in the rector’s election.
