Kristine Misane brought back to Latvia

BC, Riga, 03.03.2020.Print version
A Latvian police convoy on Tuesday brought Kristine Misane, a Latvian national who had been detained in Denmark on suspicions of kidnapping her child, back to Latvia, according to information obtained by LETA.

The woman will be placed in Ilguciems women's prison in Riga.

LETA contacted Misane's sister, but she had no official information about this.

Although Misane will be remanded in custody as a measure of security, she will be able to ask the investigating judge to revise the necessity to keep her in detention.

As reported, Misane was held in Denmark since late 2018 because she is wanted in South Africa for kidnapping her child and other alleged offenses. Denmark had decided earlier to extradite Misane to South Africa, bur the extradition was postponed three times.

To secure Misane's extradition to Latvia instead of South Africa, Latvian authorities received from Misane's representatives the woman's written confession, based on which the Riga prosecutor's office opened a criminal process in which Misane was declared a suspect in connection with the offenses allegedly committed in South Africa.

Denmark was promptly informed about the criminal process started against Misane in Latvia and the Danish authorities eventually decided to extradite her to Latvia.

The State Police has been tasked with bringing Misane back to Latvia.

Misane met a citizen of South Africa in 2011 and they had a daughter four years later. However, conflicts began between the two parents, which were initially financially motivated. The man then unilaterally decided to end the relationship and began to abuse both Misane and two minors in the family.

Fearing for the safety and lives of herself and her children, in Misane returned to Latvia in May 2018. In December 2018, Misane went on a business trip through Copenhagen to Mozambique, but was detained while crossing the border because she was wanted by Interpol. South Africa had told Interpol that Misane was wanted for kidnapping a minor. Now the woman is facing a fifteen-year prison sentence in South Africa.
