New circumstances have emerged in the story of the Lithuanian fishing vessel Juros Vilkas which has been detained by Russian officers in September 2014, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaro zinios.

The Ministry of Agriculture has found out that the ship sailing under the Lithuanian flag might have indeed illegally entered the Russian economic zone.

Earlier Russia had informed the North East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) about the changes of coordinates of its economic zone. However, the NEAFC which represents the EU did not inform any of the Member States, including Lithuania, about the changes.

Minister of Agriculture Virginija Baltraitiene says that the NEAFC must be held to account. She has already addressed the European Commission. Nonetheless, Baltraitiene has emphasised that even though Lithuania will demand responsibility of the organisation, it has no right to demand to compensate the RUB 36.6 million (LTL 2.4 million or EUR 0.7 million) bail imposed on the vessel.
