Estonian transport companies propose introducing road tax

BC, Tallinn, 09.07.2014.Print version
Several road transport companies have found that Estonia ought to introduce road tax, as has been done by nearly all countries in the region, writes Äripäev.ee/LETA.

The tax is seen as a reasonable option, as it would allow road transport enterprises to hope for an improvement in the state of roads in Estonia.

Logistics Expert at the company Herentes Marko Vooglaid said that the move would be a welcome one. “If one were to look at the Tallinn-Pärnu Road during weekends, one might say that only two out of ten lorry trucks are operated by Estonian companies,” he said.

Meelis Raam, owner of Raam Transport OÜ, said that Estonian transport companies are in a difficult position as nearly all countries in the close vicinity, except for Finland have introduced road taxes. Hence in Estonia, currently only Estonian carriers are subjected to a transport tax (heavy vehicle tax), while foreign companies do not have to pay such taxes in Estonia.

Most recent country to introduce this tax was Latvia, which made the move on July 1.
