Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevicius participating in the Conference of Ministers of Organisation for Co-Operation between Railways (OSJD), which is taking place in Vilnius, has noted that Lithuania strives to become an effective and reliable link in the global railway system, informs LETA/ELTA.

According to the head of the Government, another goal is to strengthen competitive advantage in the area of transportation and logistics.

"We attempt to constantly invest in railway infrastructure so that it meets international technical and safety standards, while the service it provides meets the needs of the fast changing environment, global business and passenger transportation," Butkevicius said.

The prime minister noted the importance of developing transportation corridors that cross Lithuania, both East-West and North-South. Effective interaction between various gauge railways will be ensures by the standard gauge, 1435 mm, railway track constructed through Kaunas next year.

"This connection will allow us to provide the market with new and effective global transportation and logistics services," the prime minister said.
