Lithuania promises not to stall Rail Baltica any longer

Estonian economy minister Urve Palo got confirmation on Thursday in Athens from her Lithuanian colleague that Vilnius will no longer be the obstacle for moving on with the Rail Baltic project, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Palo, who talked to her Lithuanian colleague Ricardas Slapsys at the European transport ministers unofficial meeting, received confirmation that the partners will no longer demand that Vilnius be included in the investment plan of the first stage of the Baltic States most important railway project.

"Lithuania confirmed that it is till interested in linking Vilnius with Rail Baltic but don't demand that the railway route be changed so that it would pass through their capital," said economy ministry adviser Rasmus Ruuda. "Vilnius will be linked to the route later."

Baltic States will have to hurry with forming the joint venture needed to build the railway line as it is the prerequisite for allocating EU support. Most likely the joint venture issue will progress fast after the meeting of Baltic States' prime ministers at the end of May.
