Estonia intends to change rules of bunkering ships

BC, Tallinn, 23.04.2014.Print version
Estonian environment minister Keit Pentus-Rosimannus formed a working group that will review the legal regulation on bunkering of ships to prevent pollution of the sea, LETA/Delfi reports.

"This year, there have been already three sea pollution cases that occurred during bunkering of ships. In two cases, the pollution reached the beaches and has required or is requiring labour-intensive cleanup," Pentus-Rosimannus said.

"Bunkering oil products in sea near the coast is a considerable danger for the Estonian sea and land environment," she added.

The working group, which includes representatives from the environment ministry, economy and communications ministry, interior ministry, Waterways Board, Environment Board, Environment Inspection, Police and Border Guard Board, Rescue Board and Ports Union, will have to review the rules on bunkering over the next two months to analyse them from the point of view of environmental safety.
