No progress in Rail Baltica working groups

BC, Tallinn, 15.04.2014.Print version
There hasn't been the desired progress in the Rail Baltica international working group and thus, next the states' deputy chancellors and deputy ministers will meet, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

The main issue is still linking Vilnius with the railway line. "Estonia has never opposed linking Vilnius but has considered it necessary that before making the decision, feasibility analysis has to be compiled and second, the European Commission has to confirm that the Vilnius link is, as a part of Rail Baltica, financeable by the EU," commented economy and communication ministry spokesman Rasmus Ruuda.

The European Commission estimates that linking Vilnius with Rail Baltica in the initial phase of the project, like Lithuania would like, isn’t in line with the currently valid European decrees.

Ruuda said that Estonia continues preparations of the domestic project and common efforts will still be made to submit the financing application to the EU.
