Design tender for Riga International Coach Terminal development concept

On March 25 JSC Riga International Coach Terminal announced a design tender for reconstruction and development concept for buildings and the adjacent area with the prize fund EUR 20 000. In line with the tender regulation – tender works shall be submitted by August 5 Year 2014, informs Jānis Igaunis from JSC Riga International Coach Terminal.

Coach Terminal

Coach terminal building was constructed in 1960-1964 for servicing Riga city and intercity buses. Architect – Georgs Mincs. In September 1964 the Bus Terminal was open to the public for the first time.

 

JSC Riga International Coach Terminal is the largest coach terminal in the country and plays an important role in the urban transport infrastructure. The coach terminal has not changed much over the years, there have not been any significant renovation works carried out in the terminal. Each year more than 3 million people and 146 thousand buses are handled at the Coach Terminal.

 

Currently, the Coach Terminal is physically outdated and does not meet the requirements for a modern transport hub.


Tender

The tender subject is an architectural project design which reflects the idea for the development of the building within the territory of JSC Riga International Coach Terminal. The competition aims at obtaining high-quality urban planning and architectural design for the subject located in the territory of the UNESCO World Heritage.

 

The design shall reflect the Coach Terminal reconstruction and expansion of the premises, which can be constructed as a wing. Within the tender design architects are to find a solution for the future requirements of the Coach Terminal, expand the premises so that they would fit perfectly in the cultural and historical environment and would provide a new added value.

 

Reconstruction of JSC Riga International Coach Terminal is required to create an advanced multi-modal transport hub, meeting the passengers' needs and providing accessibility.

 

Reconstruction and creation of a new building shall:

 

• preserve the Coach Terminal in the historic centre of Riga;

• maintain the hub in the city centre and ensure environment and technology safety to provide the respective services;

• ensure conditions compliant with modern transport hub standards;

• develop commercial area to provide services requested by customers;

• promote the development of the bus traffic in an international context.


Jury

Tender commission will be chaired by Vaira Gromule — chairperson of JSC Riga International Coach Terminal board.

 

Members of the Latvian Association of Architects and Latvian Association of Civil Engineers will also take part in the commission.
