Ministry: Estonia won't acquire fighter planes

BC, Tallinn, 14.03.2014.Print version
Estonian defence ministry said that Estonia will not be developing an independent fighter plane fleet since as a NATO member, it is not practical or financially reasonable, LETA/Delfi reports.

Saab's aviation division head Lennart Sindahl said in an interview to the newspaper Svd Näringsliv that by the year 2040, they could sell 350-400 fighter planes and Estonia, as well as Lithuania and Latvia are among states that have shown interest towards their planes.

Estonian defence ministry spokesman Artur Jugaste said that the Estonian state doesn’t plan to buy fighter planes now or in the foreseeable future and the ministry hasn’t held negotiations with Saab or shown any interest.

Jugaste pointed out that developing independent fighter plane fleet would be so expensive and complicated that it would stop the development of all other military forces.

"NATO fighter planes have guarded the air space of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania since 2004 and like sending six additional fighter planes F-15 to Lithuania showed, NATO is capable of increasing its air policing capacity considerably if need be," he said.
