he Estonian Riigikogu will on Wednesday start discussing the state transport development plan for the years 2014-2020, which this time focuses on improving access to public transport, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

All transport sector activities will cost around 3 billion euros over the seven years.

Around 500 million euros of it will come from European Union funds. This does not include the expenditures accompanying the possible construction of Rail Baltica. While during the previous seven years, a lot of investments were made in the basic infrastructure - big traffic hubs were built, railways were renovated and new trains were bought, now the attention will focus on integrating different forms of transport and improving access to public transport. Economy ministry transport development and investments department head Toomas Haidak said that the key words could be tram connection from central Tallinn to Tallinn Airport, better access to the Tallinn Old Port and improving train connections in the Tallinn-St Petersburg and Tartu-Riga routes.

The transport development plan for 2014-2020 prescribes, among other things, that in the next eight years, the number of train passengers will double in Estonia: while in 2012, people made 4.4 million trips, in 2020 they should make over 8.8 million.
