Alternative transport corridor in Riga: study research supported by the EU

In the Commission’s press-release “TEN-T: Riga's transport infrastructure system to get a boost from EU funding” (11 February 2014) is underlined that system will be supported by the EU funding.
The European Union will support the study project with
over €1.5 million from the TEN-T Programme a series of studies looking at the
connection of the Freeport of Riga in Latvia to the TEN-T road network.
Corridor’s construction will start in 2016
The studies, selected under the 2012 TEN-T Annual Programme, specifically concern the detailed design needed ahead of the construction in 2016 of a 9,1 km stretch (Segment 1) of the Riga Northern Transport Corridor (Northern Corridor).
Crossing Riga from East to West
The Northern Corridor is an east-west motorway which will cross the old historic town centre of Riga for a total length of 30 km. In the east it will join the Freeport of Riga and the E-67 "Via Baltica" motorway, while in the west it will connect the Riga bypass and, ultimately, the E-22 motorway.
The Northern Corridor will create a robust alternative for transit traffic, divert traffic from the centre of Riga City (Old Town), improve the local environmental conditions and, by enabling access to the port of Riga, will enhance interoperability/multimodal transport.
The Action concerns the necessary studies, i.e. detailed design including building permit, needed for the construction of the segment 1 of the project.
The segment 1 (the so called "Brivibas Dublieris" or "the alternate of Brivibas street") forms the eastern part of the Northern Corridor. It will start on E-67 at Bergi and end on Gustava Zemgala Avenue (Eastern Bypass). The approximate length of the segment is 9.1 kilometres.
