Estonia: Lithuania should extend Rail Baltica to Vilnius at own expense

BC, Vilnius, 16.01.2014.Print version
Estonia holds a position that if Lithuania wants to link Vilnius to the European-gauge railway Rail Baltica, the country will have to implement it using its own funds. This position was expressed by Estonia's Minister of Economic Affairs and Communications Juhan Parts, reports LETA/ELTA.

The Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius says that such position is too strict.

"I know the Estonian minister of economy very well. Such statement is a bit too strict, I believe that during the negotiations we will reach an agreement," said Butkevicius on Wednesday.

Earlier it was announced that Latvia and Estonia wanted to move the issue of Vilnius linking to Rail Baltica to the political level. These disagreements between the Baltic States might disrupt the project.

Nevertheless, the Lithuanian prime minister remains optimistic.

"It is an argument at the level of experts. An important aspect should be emphasised that transport ministers of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Poland have signed a memorandum on the implementation of the Rail Baltica 2 project. As a result, a technical discussion on the branch line to Vilnius is taking place," said Butkevicius in an interview with the national radio LRT on Tuesday.
