Lithuania's MPs encouraged not changing direction of Rail Baltica

BC, Vilnius, 17.12.2013.Print version
The board of the public organization of Kaunas city Unified Kaunas (Vieningas Kaunas) encouraged the members of the Seimas to not approve of the project resolution aimed at the radical changes in the Rail Baltica directions, informs LETA/ELTA.

The Seimas is planning to consider the resolution on Tuesday. If the Seimas approves of the resolution, the Rail Baltica will be directed through Vilnius city and not through Kaunas city.

"Kaunas city is significant for the development of the Lithuania's business, industry and logistics. Next year, it is planned to open the Intermodal Terminal Kaunas Public Logistics Centre. As a result, the intention of the members of the Seimas to drop Kaunas city out of the project Rail Baltica is illogical. Such a decision should have painful outcomes not only for Kaunas but of the entire country as well," said chair of the board of the public organization of Kaunas city Visvaldas Matijosaitis.

Firstly, it was planned that Lithuania's city Kaunas was to be the only one point within modern transport axes where the Russian gauge track will meet with the European one. It was believed that, since 2015, when a track gauge of project Rail Baltica was built to Kaunas, a more rapid development of the city was to be stimulated and the city was to become easier accessible and more known internationally.
