The number of recreational crafts or small ships is increasing by a thousand each year in Estonia, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

At the end of October this year, nearly 26,000 recreational crafts and vessels with length of less than 12 metres were in registry in Estonia. This is by 1,175 more than at the same time last year. The registry grows by around the same every year.

The number of first-time registered recreational craft is growing – in the first ten months of this year, Estonia has gained 1,211 recreational crafts an vessels with length up to 12 metres. 797 of these boats were new.

The Saaremaa Island Kuressaare port captain Oskar Jõgi said that the number of recreational craft in Estonia is growing. "As I have heard from ship-owners, registration of a recreational craft is relatively complicated. It is much easier in Finland or elsewhere in Scandinavia, I think that this needs to be simplified somewhat," said Jõgi.

He said that 478 yachts visited the Kuressaare marina this year, making it the second best season ever. The best year was 2011, when 520 yachts visited the marina. The number of Estonian yachts is growing and this year there were already 100 Estonian visiting yachts.
