Estonia plans to gather ships it owns in one company

BC, Tallinn, 26.09.2013.Print version
The Estonian economy minister submitted on Thursday to the government a plan of how to organise the ferry traffic between Estonian's largest islands Saaremaa and Hiiumaa and the mainland in the future, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The ministry estimated that in long-term perspective, it would be necessary to consider gathering all state-owned ships into the holding of one company to guarantee management and maintenance of the fleet with the optimal costs.

The ministry thinks that it would be considerably more favourable if a state company acquires the ships and then gives them to an operator, than the current system where the bidder for operator services has to find ships too.

The public transport contract with Väinamere Liinid OÜ for operating the mainland-islands connections was concluded in 2006 and is valid till September 30, 2016.
