Kallas: Rail Baltica is closer to reality than ever before

BC, Tallinn, 30.07.2013.Print version
The success of the Rail Baltica railway project has never been as close to reality as it is now, says European Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas, informs LETA.

Kallas told Estonian national television ETV's evening news on Sunday that the schedule is a tough one and time is pressing. "Financing rules have been agreed upon. This means that co-financing can reach 85%, which is very high. There is no such high co-financing in other infrastructure projects. These possibilities have been created," said Kallas.

He expressed hope that all three Baltic states will reach an agreement in the Rail Baltica issue. "Poland has confirmed to me that they will do their part. Finns are also very much interested. It (Rail Baltica – ed.) is closer to reality than ever before," said Kallas.

Economy and communications minister Juhan Parts said that details of founding a joint venture for Rail Baltica will be discussed with Latvia and Lithuania in the coming weeks and in August hopefully it will be legally formed.

Parts said that for Estonia, designing the route of the railway is very important now. It is not a desk job but requires communicating with all parties to find the best solution.
