Finnish WRC champion elected Estonian Autosport Union president

The Estonian Autosport Union (EAU) took a step that no local sports union has so far taken – for the first time a foreigner will start managing the union, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

As expected, EAU board elected World Rally Championships (WRC) champion Ari Vatanen from Finland as EAU's new president. 42 board members were for, 4 against his candidacy.

 

60-year-old Vatanen was WRC champion in 1981 and is a 4 time winner of the Dakar rally. In 1999-2009 he was a European Parliament member.

 

Vatanen has said that he believes that he can contribute a lot to the Estonian automotive sports via his experiences and contacts, taking Estonia's message to the International Car Association FIA too.
