Yuskin: Estonia's position in border talks with Russia is good

BC, Tallinn, 04.02.2013.Print version
Director of the Baltic Centre for Russian Studies Vladimir Yushkin says that Estonian-Russian border agreement has a certain role in Russia's energy diplomacy with the European Union and he estimates that the Estonian position at the border talks is good, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Yushkin said that the relations of Russia and the EU in the energy sphere cooled down somewhat last year. "Moscow is trying to restore its former position, maybe looking for new allies in the European Union to not fail in its energy diplomacy. And that agreement on the European Union and Russian border plays a role here," explained Yushkin.

Yushkin compared the border agreement to the obligatory programme in figure skating. Only after that is done, more complicated pirouettes can follow.

Yushik says that the position of Estonia at the talks is good. "Estonia's strong position is first expressed in the fact that Moscow started the negotiations. Second, Estonia has a strong position since the background created by the Russian media to the negotiations is positive," he said.

The first round of consultations took place on October 31 last year in Moscow and the second round took place in Tallinn in December.
