EU to fight pirates to protect seamen

The European Union plans to increase its budget up to 14.9 million euros for to fight against Somali pirates, the maritime news portal Jura24.lt reports.

The mission has been extended until the end of 2014, informs LETA.

 

This year saw a substantial decrease of pirate activities.

 

However, the number of attacks is growing in the territorial waters of Guinea and Nigeria which puts European sailors at risk. Despite the overall decrease in attacks, the pirates still managed to seize 20 ships, four crew members were murdered, 25 ships were fired at and 80 ships were raided.
