Nils Freivalds, chairman of the board at the joint-stock company Pasazieru vilciens (Passenger Train), handed in a resignation today, and Transport Minister Aivis Ronis accepted the resignation, as Ronis' spokesman Aivis Freidenfelds told the Nozare.lv business portal.

Ronis believes that further work must continue in the procurement of new trains for Pasazieru vilciens, because new electric and diesel trains are necessary for passenger transport in Latvia, writes LETA.

"The new trains will partly be manufactured in Latvia, thus contributing to the development of local manufacturing and creating new jobs, which is very important for Latvia at the moment," stressed Ronis.

Ronis has offered Freivalds, taking into account his experience, to become a consultant for Pasazieru vilciens.

The Transport Ministry has already appointed a new CEO for Pasazieru vilciensArtis Birkmanis, previously a board member at the state-owned joint-stock company Latvijas Gaisa satiksme (Latvian Air Traffic). Birkmanis has a master's degree in business management from the Riga International School of Economics and Business Administration, in the past he worked in the banking, leasing and investment sectors.
