Law enforcement institutions foil attempt to smuggle in 3.1 mln cigarettes into Latvia

Print versionThis past weekend, the State Revenue Service of Latvia (SRS), in cooperation with the Latvian Border Guard and Belarus law enforcement institutions foiled an attempt to smuggle into Latvia 3.1 million illegal cigarettes.

A criminal process has been started, with officials at the State Revenue Service's Customs Administration in Latgale Province (southeastern Latvia) named as suspects in the smuggling scheme.
The cigarettes were found in a ''Renault'' automobile attempting to enter Latvia from Belarus this past weekend, LETA was informed by the SRS's public relations department. The cigarettes were hidden in a special hidden compartment.
The smuggler was detained and a criminal process has been started against him.
Furthermore, the actions of local customs officials in Latgale Province are also being investigated in connection with the smuggling affair.
In the interests of the investigation, no further information will be released at this moment.
