EU: Lithuania maintains obstacles to the registration of right-hand drive vehicles against Directives

Danuta Pavilenene, BC, Vilnius, 28.10.2011.Print version
The European Commission decided Thursday to refer Lithuania to the EU Court of Justice because it maintains obstacles to the registration of right-hand drive new or used vehicles.

The restriction constitutes a disproportionate barrier to the import of such vehicles from other EU member states (for example when Lithuanian citizens return to their country after having worked in the UK or in Ireland), the Commission said.

By proceeding this way, Vilnius is in breach of EU rules on vehicle type-approval and on the free movement of goods (Directive 70/311/EEC on type-approval of steering equipment and Framework Directive 2007/46/EC on EC type-approval of motor vehicles), the European Commission noted, reports LETA/ELTA.
