Government accepts proposal to introduce security fees at Riga Airport

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 20.10.2011.Print version
Yesterday, the Cabinet of Ministers accepted the proposal to introduce security fees at Riga International Airport, stipulating that EUR 6.5 (LVL 4.54) to EUR 7 (LVL 4.89) will have to be paid for each passenger.

The Transport Ministry previously pointed out that such fees are adequate to the required security measures that must be ensured by the airport, writes LETA.

The ministry's representative Aivis Freidenfelds told Nozare.lv that the bill, which was passed yesterday, is harmonized with the Cabinet of Ministers' committee, and the fees will be introduced in the amount of EUR 7 if the money is collected by the airport or EUR 6.5 if the money is collected by the airline.

As reported, on October 10, the Cabinet of Ministers' committee put brakes on the proposal.

The committee, instructed by Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity), submitted the proposal for additional harmonization with the Justice Ministry. The ministry pointed out that these services are public and cannot be subjected to late fees.

The ministers were also not sure whether the new fees will apply to those passengers who have already bought their tickets, and how these changes will affect the airport's transit passengers.

Dombrovskis in turn wanted to receive the airport's explanation why the estimated security fees in Riga were higher than in other airports.

The airport emphasizes that the new fees are necessary because of lower subsidies from the state.
