Eesti Päevaleht cites Russian news portal fontanka.ru, which wrote yesterday that in the framework of preparations of football world championships that take place in 2018 in Russia, Russian Railways intends to open a train route between Tallinn and St Petersburg.

Russian Railways branch company October Railways director general Viktor Stepov said that implementation of the project will start in 2012 as it is included in their investment plans.

The Tallinn-St Petersburg train route has not been operated since 2007.

Estonian Railways PR manager Urmas Glase said that he knows as much about it as media has reported about it. The plan of opening a railway line would enable to reduce the burden of the airport and port, for example. Glase said that Estonian Railways has nothing against some operator using their rails.

If Russia wishes to launch transport on the route only by the time of the championships, it would be enough to hand in an application in 2017 or 2016.
