Flick: searches at companies affiliated with airBaltic – completely unnecessary

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 27.09.2011.Print version
Yesterday's searches at several companies associated with the national airline airBaltic were "completely unnecessary", airBaltic President Bertolt Flick said in an interview with Latvian State Radio today.

Bertolt Flick.

Flick was surprised to learn what documents were inspected by the Corruption Prevention Bureau's officers. The same documents were analyzed during KPMG audit and were submitted to the government's consultant Prudentia. It is possible that they were previously sent to the bureau as well, writes LETA.

Flick, who is also a co-owner of airBaltic minority shareholder, Baltijas aviacijas sistemas (BAS), emphasized that the bureau's activities will not affect BAS decision on the airline's share capital increase.

Commenting on whether he would be detained during the searches if he was in Riga, Flick pointed out that he has not been informed about any "reproaches". The airline's president explained that he is currently in Germany because of Economy Minister Artis Kampars' (Unity) comments that the airline's management must be taken over in an aggressive manner.

Flick said that he will definitely return to Latvia, since he has lived here for 17 years. However, for this to happen in the near future, it is necessary to clarify the "legal situation".

As reported, yesterday, Corruption Prevention Bureau's officers conducted searches at the Riga International Airport – at North Hub Services (NHS), airBaltic, Baltic Miles and FLS offices. The searches were also carried out at airBaltic ticket offices in downtown Riga.

The bureau's searches raise a question about muscle-flexing ahead of the government's session today, when a decision will be likely made on the airline's future, Nozare.lv was informed by BAS representative Juris Petersons.
