Transport Ministry: Latvia may have suffered significant losses due to Flick's activities

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 12.09.2011.Print version
The activities of the national airline airBaltic president Bertolt Flick may have caused considerable losses to the state, points out the Transport Ministry, commenting information that the airline's minority shareholder, Baltijas aviacijas sistemas (BAS), has attempted to register bogus shares to gain controlling interest in airBaltic.

Transport Ministry spokesman Aivis Freidenfelds told "Nozare.lv" that the ministry has turned to the Register of Enterprises and law enforcement authorities, informing them about the possible violations by Flick.

The ministry emphasizes that the state still owns the majority stake in the airline, and the distribution of shares between the airline's shareholders has not changed, writes LETA.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis (Unity) informed about the said BAS activities during a PM candidates' debate on the "TV3" television channel.

"TV3" reporters have obtained documents, which indicate that the state has possibly lost its controlling interest in the airline, and BAS wants to document the changes with the Register of Enterprises.

Dombrovskis was evasive in his comments regarding this issue and pointed out that information in these documents is unfounded.

"TV3" also reported that the Corruption Prevention Bureau and Prosecutor General's Office have been informed about BAS activities, and the Transport Ministry, in a secret letter last week, urged the Register of Enterprises not to register anything regarding the airline's shareholders that could have negative impact on the state's influence in airBaltic.

The newspaper Dienas Bizness reports that BAS has possibly paid for the so-called SAS bonds, attempting to increase the company's influence in the airline by 12.4%.

The airline's paid-up share capital has been increased by LVL 59,109.8, reaching the amount of the signed share capital – LVL 534,725.

There is no official information about which one of the airline's shareholders increased the airline's paid-up share capital.
