EUR 4.3 mln bribe meant for Riga officials in Daimler affair; Leonards Tenis arested

Investigators on the so-called Daimler bribery case say that go-betweens had received over EUR 4.3 million to hand over to Riga municipal officials, the Corruption Prevention Bureau (CPB) reported yesterday.

The CPB investigators are cooperating with the Stuttgart prosecutor's office and the Baden-Wurtemberg police.

 

As reported, information received from investigators indicates that Riga City Council officials feature in several incidences of bribery, plotted by now former employees at the German auto manufacturer Daimler subsidiary "Evo Bus" – a scheme to have tenders favorably manipulated for 117 "Mercedes Benz" buses from 2002 to 2006.

 

According to case materials from the U.S., between 1998 and 2008 the German concern paid at least USD 56 million (LVL 32.25 million) in bribes in 22 countries.

CPB has several suspects in the case, informs LETA.

 

The person detained by CPB is ex-Riga Mayor Gundars Bojars' then-advisor on transport affairs and Rigas satiksme council deputy chairman, Leonards Tenis. A Riga court ordered him held in custody yesterday.
