Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 10.06.2010.Print version
The Saeima plenary passed a bill today whereby penalties for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated become a lot stiffer in Latvia.

For DWI at the 0.2-0.5 level on the breathalyzer, for those operators with less than two years experience, the penalty will now be LVL 150-LVL 300 and suspension of license for six months, instead of the previous three, writes LETA.

For DWI at the 0.5-1.0 level on the breathalyzer, the penalty will now be LVL 300-LVL 450 and suspension of license for one year.

Over 1.0, not exceeding 1.5 on the breathalyzer, arrest will be imposed between 5-10 days, the fine will be LVL 600-LVL 800, with license revoked for two years.

Over the 1.5 level, arrest will be imposed between 10-15 days, the fine will be LVL 800-LVL 1,000, with license revoked for four years.

For refusal to undergo alcohol level testing, arrest will be imposed between 10-15 days, the fine will be LVL 800-LVL 1,000, with license revoked for four years.
